Frequently asked questions

You can create a thread in Discussion. We're always up for hearing your suggestions.
If the forums are under maintenance, check the Unity Twitter account for updates. If the forums appear broken, i.e., a cosmetic issue, you can create a forum post in Discussion or contact one of our Community Managers Maru and Leonhard.
Before you post on a certain board, it is best to refer to the Unity Community Code of Conduct, where the restrictions are outlined before posting. This may explain why your post has not appeared after submission.
Yes, your subscription will automatically renew with the same commitment term and payment frequency as your original subscription, unless you change your renewal settings or plan option in your Unity ID before your next scheduled renewal date.
If you are the Owner of a Unity Organization with a Unity subscription associated, you can add seats to your subscription via your Unity ID. For further information, please see the Knowledge Base article: How do I increase the number of seats on my subscription plan? It is not possible to reduce the number of seats on a subscription that is still within its initial 12-month commitment period.
During your commitment period, it is not possible to downgrade your subscription to a lower tier. You can upgrade your subscription to a higher tier whilst in your commitment period. However, you cannot reduce the number of seats if you upgrade.
Yes, you can upgrade your subscription to an available higher tier via your Unity ID. You will begin a new commitment term when you upgrade, and any prepaid amount remaining from the original term will be credited towards your upgrade payment.
Software subscriptions are not cancellable during your commitment period and arenon-refundable. This means that once you commit to a subscription for a certain period of time, you are obligated to pay all payments owing for that period. Even if you stop making payments and your license is shut down, you are still obligated to pay the outstanding payment(s) for your subscription period.
Unity licenses are associated with the Organization on which a subscription was purchased. This means that if a user leaves an Organization, the license seat can be revoked, then re-assigned to another user within the same Organization by a Manager or Owner.
Yes, you can use your Unity license offline by manually activating. However, some services such as the Package Manager and Collaborate are not available offline.
We always recommend that users back up any of their projects before upgrading them to a new version of Unity.
The most common cause for this error is the license key running out of activations. If you have recently updated your OS or changed any hardware, this can alter the hardware ID to which the Unity License File (.ULF) is attached, effectively making the current .ULF redundant. Another cause for the error 'Your serial number is not valid' is a connection issue between your machine and the Unity license servers.
To access your new subscription, you will need to assign yourself a seat to receive a serial key and activate your license. If you purchased the subscription on behalf of an organization, you need to assign each user a seat before they can activate their license.
Unity supports the following currencies: USD, EUR, JPY, KRW, CNY, and BRL (restrictions apply). Our primary payment gateway is WorldPay, which covers most markets.
The Unity Splash Screen is uniform across all platforms. It displays promptly while the first Scene loads asynchronously in the background. This is different from your own introductory screens or animations, which can take time to appear due to Unity having to load the entire engine and first Scene before displaying them.
Yes, you are free to license content from a third party for use in developing your game, irrespective of which version of Unity that content was created in. Can we use the code/art/assets in Unity Technologies' example projects? Assets in our tutorial and example projects are well known, and therefore we recommend you don’t use them in commercial games and content. They are meant to be used in non-commercial content for educational purposes only.
Yes, you are free to create content with Unity Personal and combine it with content created in Educational versions of Unity.
The Unity Platform Roadmap can be found on the website here. The Roadmap is broken down into different sections to give a more granular view of what's happening where and when. In addition to the Roadmap, each section allows users to submit their own ideas and feedback!
You can find the full release notes for the most recent Unity release on the What's New page. You can find release notes for all previous Unity versions using the drop-down menu on the right side of the same page.
Unity collects consumption tax on subscriptions where it is required by law. Please get in touch with your local tax authority for details in your country of residence. VAT and tax numbers are given by local tax authorities and allow you to avoid paying consumption taxes from purchases made on any Unity store page if you are exempt from doing so.
All Unity subscriptions include access to our powerful, real-time 3D Engine alongside various services to help manage, operate, and monetize your projects.
In order to develop to locked platforms such as Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, you need to apply for developer status with each console's manufacturer and have a current Unity Pro or Enterprise subscription (Xbox and PlayStation only).
The fastest way to activate your license is online. Please see the following Knowledge Base article for guidance on activating your license: How do I activate my license?
Serial numbers, also known as license keys, let the Unity Editor know what level of access to give each user. This is why it is required as part of the activation process. Personal Edition users do not need a serial number to activate – they have a different option to select during the activation process. For Pro, Plus, and Enterprise users, you can find your license key via your ID account by clicking My Seats to the left of the screen in your account settings.
For the full steps on returning your activations, see the Knowledge Base article: How do I return the activations on my Pro/ Plus/ Enterprise license?
You can have as many versions of the Unity Editor installed and activated on your machine as you need with the help of the Unity Hub.
One seat of Unity Plus, Pro, or Enterprise can be activated on up to two machines at a time.
Since it's not possible to purchase multiple subscriptions on the same Organization, it's also not possible to combine different payment plans. For example, you cannot have a 12-month prepaid subscription & a pay monthly subscription on the same Organization.
The date you sign up for your subscription is the same date your payment is due each month. For example, if you begin your subscription on the 15th of the month, you’ll be charged for subsequent months on the 15th.
The following payment methods are available: Credit card; PayPal; Alipay; UnionPay; and BoaCompra (restrictions apply). To pay by invoice, please get in touch with a Unity Sales representative.
Students enrolled in an accredited educational institution and of legal age to consent to the collection and processing of their personal information (e.g., age 13 in the US, 16 in the EU) are eligible for the Unity Student plan. With the new commenting system, Viafoura, your user profile page only shows a list of new comments made on the new version of the blog. Even if you comment on the old version of the blog using a particular email address and then use the same email address to create a Unity ID account and comment on the new version of the blog, your comments from both systems will not be consolidated into a single list.
Most comments are posted under the publisher’s full name. Anonymous comments appear in cases where comments are not linked to any account. If your name is included with your account details, it will show in the body of the comment.
Legacy comments are comments imported from the old version of the blog to the current version.
We are enhancing the user experience on our blog by enabling users like you to have real conversations. Signing in with the Unity ID login helps reduce unwanted conversations and spam content in the comments.
Viafoura is a company that provides an easy-to-use comments feature for online communities. Comments on Unity blogs are powered by Viafoura Conversations, which has helped us avoid spam comments and provide additional commenting features to our users.
A user can be a member of multiple Organizations and can thus be assigned a subscription seat from multiple Organizations. As a user, you can also bring a subscription seat with you when collaborating on another Organization's project. Please note, you cannot be assigned seats from multiple subscription tiers. For example, you cannot be assigned a Unity Pro seat in one Organization and a Unity Plus seat in another.
To assign a seat to a freelancer/contractor, the Owner or Manager of the Organization will first need to invite the freelancer/contractor to become a member of the Organization with the subscription attached.
You can manage the seats in your subscription by going to Organization > Subscription > Seats. Under the Seat Management tab, you can see how many seats are assigned and left to be assigned. You can also revoke seats and re-assign them to new users.
All seats can be distributed to members of an Organization by either the Owner or the Manager of that Organization.
When you subscribe to Unity, you purchase a seat or access rights for each person in your Organization using Unity. For example, if you have 10 users on your team, you need a Unity Pro subscription with 10 seats, with each seat costing $150/month. For more information, please see the article What is a 'Seat'?
You can add team members to your project through the Unity Editor or from the Services dashboard. For more information, please see the following documentation: Adding team members to your Unity project
As an Owner or Manager of an Organization, you can invite new members to your Organization via your Unity ID. For the full steps, please see the Knowledge Base article: How do I invite a new member to my Organization?
There is no limit to how many Organizations you can create via your Unity ID. For more information, please see the Knowledge Base article: How do I create a new Organization?
Payment methods refer to things you use to pay for your Unity subscriptions and Asset Store purchases, for example, a credit card. A Payout Profile is for users who receive earnings from Services such as: The Asset Store (publishers); Unity Ads; and Unity Live Help.
A user can be associated with multiple Organizations if they wish. See the following Knowledge Base articles for more information regarding Unity Organizations: What can Owners, Managers, and Users do in an Organization? How do I create a new Organization?
Owners of an Organization can revoke Unity seats at any time. This may be required if the Owner wishes to transfer the seat to a new user within the Organization. Once a seat has been revoked, the user will be notified via email. If your seat has been revoked and you believe this to be a mistake, please contact the Organization's Owner directly.
An Organization has users and projects. Any user that is a member of an Organization will also have access to the projects associated.
Unity provides features to allow users associated with a Unity project to create faster and communicate better with each other. Users associated with a Unity project can also use the Unity services associated with the Unity project’s Organization.
Anyone with a Unity ID can be associated with a project. For more information, see the manual page: Adding team members to your Unity project
A project lives inside a Unity Organization. Unity projects have access to Unity services in that Organization and can be shared and managed with others through Unity. Anyone who is a part of that Organization has access to that project. However, you can also invite people from outside the Organization into a specific project through the editor. They will have access to everything in that project, but they won't have any access to anything else in the same Organization.
Groups are a tool to help larger organizations better manage their teams. An Owner or Manager of an Organization can take members from their Organization, put them in a group, and add that group to a Unity project, thereby giving members in that group access.
In an Organization, you have different administrative rights depending on whether you are an Owner, Manager, or User. Different roles give access to certain levels of administrative rights within an Organization.
Organizations are a way of organizing your projects, subscriptions and assets through the Unity website. Anyone associated with an Organization has access to that Organization's licenses, projects and financial information, based on their Organization role.
When you create a Unity ID, the system automatically creates a default Organization under your account. Organizations are a way of organizing your projects and licenses through our website. Subscription and Asset Store purchases are associated with your Organization.
